Edinburg Airport set to sell old facilities, attracting interest of many airports

Edinburg is set to sell parts of the airport this week when snowploughs, fire tenders as well as security scanners go under hammer. The equipment to be auctioned includes some of the used cars that patrol the perimeter of the airport as well as two Fokker 27 aircrafts that had been used for fire training. The airport aims to fetch hundreds of pounds from the sales. The money is targeted to fund improvements at the airport.

A hanger –full of over 400 lots has been put on sale and this is said to attract a number of airports from different parts of the world especially the developing countries where these facilities are insufficient. The airports will have the opportunity to access these parts on Wednesday when the airport will make them available for purchase.

Other equipment for sale during that time includes barcode scanners, computer accessories, and TV monitors as well as conveyor belts. The event is organised by Ayrshire-based Wilson auctions. It is said that the auction has been expanded unlike the initial arrangements the airport had to auction old fittings and equipment from its security hall.

Bob Chambers who is the commercial manager at Wilson Auctions said that it had grown at the time they realised they had the opportunity to check in other departments and see if there were any old equipment that may not be required by the airport. He added that sales are very rare and this will be a rare opportunity.

The scanners have been in use for only five years hence more airports will be interested in them. Chambers did not give the price estimates but he noted that the Cobra fire tender would go for approximately £40,000.

A spokesman at the airport said that they want to change from the old systems to new systems and that meant an investment in new facilities and equipment.
