Gatwick Airport has released its noise management report which places Gatwick as the industry leader in aircraft noise management.
The report was commissioned by Gatwick a year ago and carried out by Noise Communications Solutions (NCS). The aim was to scrutinize its noise initiatives and its noise management approach with other airports in the UK and Europe including Heathrow airport.
The managing director of NCS, Vicki Hughes said that it was clear after the Gatwick airport noise management approach, through implementation of several innovative measures that Gatwick maintains its position as an industry leader in management of airport noise.
This announcement comes as Gatwick is prepared to host its second Annual noise seminar to discuss Gatwick’s progress on its “fly quiet and clean” noise management programme. Gatwick uses the forum to discuss noise issues and to listen to the views of industry experts, environmental experts and community groups.
CEO of Gatwick, Stewart Wingate said that they did take noise management seriously and it was great that their efforts have been validated by renowned noise experts.
Gatwick launched ‘fly quiet and clean’ programme last year and since then it has launched a number of innovative noise initiatives which include being the first airport to introduce precision navigation on all of its departure routes.
This initiative allows aircrafts to fly on more precise routes rather than wide swathes, hence reducing the number of people impacted by noise.
Gatwick has consulted on changes to its airspace which would see it reduce noise by 65% and expand the airport noise insulation Scheme to cover 40% more homes .This has made Gatwick the first airport to make such steps in noise management.
Stewart also acknowledged that there will always be communities affected by aircraft noise and therefore promised that Gatwick will continue to take a responsible approach to noise reduction.
