Court Set to Hear Uber’s Appeal against London Ban Today

Uber’s appeal case is set for hearing today at Westminster Magistrates Court. The ride-hailing app company is appealing a decision by the transport regulator, Transport for London (TfL), to revoke its operating license in the capital.

The hearing will set the foundation for a full case to be heard some time next year. This comes after Mayor Sadiq Khan’s warning that Uber’s appeal may go on for a very long time.

An Uber spokesperson said, “We filed our appeal so that we can continue serving millions of riders and tens of thousands of drivers in London.

However, we continue having constructive discussions with Transport for London in order to resolve this. As our new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has said, we are determined to make things right.

This is the second of two fundamental legal battles facing Uber as the company is to get a decision from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) about whether it should qualify as a technology or transport company. Registration as a transport company will see Uber face strict local taxi regulations.

The company recently flew its CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to London for talks with TfL in a bid to clean up its tainted image. More deliberations are likely to be held in the coming year.

In other news, major disruptions are likely to continue hitting the train, tube and airport services after heavy snowfall yesterday, 10 December. This is the largest snowfall in London in five years with north London experiencing 3CM of snow.

Yesterday power supply problems due to heavy snowfall led to the closure of the Central Line, Piccadilly Line, Metropolitan Line and London Overground.

Londoners elicited mixed reactions following the snowfall. Taking to Twitter, some panicked while others couldn’t be happier with the snow.
