TfL Apologizes to Singer Will Young after Homophobic Abuse by London Bus Driver

Transport for London (TfL) apologized to Pop Idol winner Will Young, after the singer said a bus driver hurled homophobic slurs at him.

The singer said the driver called him a “poofter” during the altercation that took place in Fulham, West London.

The incident is said to have taken place on 12 December at 12:25pm after which, Young appealed to TfL to help track down the bus driver.

Young took to twitter to express his frustration. On 5 January he wrote, “Homosphobic abuse from a TfL bus driver calling me a poofter. Reported it ten minutes after it happened and TfL been amazing. However bus companies on route say video footage gone as too late - quite how someone complains and actually GETS footage I am unsure.”

In another tweet, Young said, “TfL doing everything they can but I am appealing to @TfL@SadiqKhan to help me find the driver to ensure he doesn't abuse others . PLEASE DM me.”

Steve Burton, chief executive at TfL apologized to Young by saying: “We're very sorry to hear of Will Young's experience and are looking into it urgently.

“Everyone has the right to travel without fear of abuse or intimidation and if anyone witnesses or is victim to hate crime they should report it immediately."

“We work closely with our police partners to eradicate hate crimes and fully investigate all reported incidents.”

Young further said, “All I need is an apology, no witch hunt.”

In other news, commuters begin week of chaos as train strikes on South Western, Greater Anglia and Southern Rail begin today. South Western Railway commuters will be worst hit with a quarter of its service cancelled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week. This comes after last ditch talks between the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union and rail bosses failed to bear fruit.

Greater Anglia has however, assured commuters of running a full service despite the strike. The rail company said extra staff had been trained to cover for those on strike.
