Newquay Named “Fastest Growing” Airport in the UK

Newquay Cornwall Airport has been named the UK’s fastest growing airport again. The airport’s top management attributes this to a 48 per cent growth registered in 2016, after passenger numbers rose by almost half. Cornwall’s Airport handled 369,000 passengers compared to 2015’s 250,000.

This becomes the third consecutive year of double digit growth for Cornwall’s main commercial airport.Cornwall Airport Limited, the company that runs the airport, has expressed optimism that its passenger numbers will further rise by more than 50 per cent by the end of the financial year 16/17.

With several new routes and service extensions set for this summer, the airport is right on track for even more impressive figures.

Ryanair and Aer Lingus have introduced new routes from Newquay this summer, while Faro begins in March and Cork later in May. Flybe has also added more flights to some of its popular routes from the airport, such as Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Belfast and Leeds Bradford.

Al Titterington, Managing Director at Cornwall Airport Newquay, said: "Our business strategy has been to grow the Airport in a way that is sustainable and best meets the needs of the Cornish residents as well as supporting the local economy.

"Whilst we don't expect the growth to continue at quite such an extraordinary rate, we do expect to see continued strong and sustainable growth again this year, taking the Airport close to record levels.”

Mr Titterington added that with a weaker Pound after Brexit, visitor numbers are likely to rise this year, which will significantly boost the local economy.

Adam Paynter, Cabinet Member for Resources and Deputy Leader of Cornwall Council, added: "This administration has worked very productively with the Airport over the last four years to grow the business and reduce the burden on the Cornish council tax payer by more than halving the money we pay to keep the Airport open.”

He also urged residents to support the airport as a vital part of Cornwall’s transport infrastructure.
