Luton Airport to Replace Bus Transfer with 1.3 Mile Light Rail

Bus transfers will soon be a thing of the past as Luton Airport plans to build a £200m light rail link to the nearest railway station.  This is hoped to reduce the journey between the station and the terminal, making it a less than 30 minutes complete journey from Luton Airport to St Pancras railway station.

The automated rail link running 24 hours a day is expected to make journeys between the airport and Central London much faster compared to the current options available. Developers Arup have designed the proposal which now awaits planning approval to be submitted in autumn.
Asked why a light rail link and not a fixed rail, Luton Airport officials say that building a fixed rail would be difficult because it is a 40 Meters downhill from the station.

Luton Airport is also set to spend £110m more on its terminals and layout in a bid to double its capacity from the current 9 million to 18 million passengers per year by 2020.

The 1.3 miles project will be funded by Luton Borough Council, which owns the airport freehold. The Airport’s chief executive, Nick Barton, said: “We’re delighted Luton borough council is making the investment. It’s perfect for us: we’ve been on a journey but there’s always been that fundamental gap between the terminal and the very good train service – served by a bus, which just isn’t good enough.“

“It’s raising the game and raising our standard. When you get to Luton Airport Parkway you will think that you’re actually at the terminal.”

EasyJet, the airport’s main carrier welcomed the news, saying the plan is in tandem with their plans to double operation size by over the next 10years.

This current development  comes after  plans by Stansted Airport to have a fast rail connection to Central London  were discouraged by the Network Rail, citing the fact that it would only make a 2-5 minutes difference from the current train journey which takes 45-53 minutes.
