London Luton Worst Airport in terms of Flight Delays, CAA Says

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) released data that showed London Luton as the worst airport in terms of flight departure delays.

According to the data compiled by the Press Association, London Luton has an average delay time of 19.7 minutes. Gatwick came in second from last with an average 18.9 minutes and Jersey Airport followed at 18.7 minutes.

Heathrow was the best performer with an average delay time of 11 minutes despite it being the busiest airport in the UK. Other top performers were Leeds Bradford and Belfast City airports, which tied at an average delay time of 11.3 minutes.

The average delay time for all 25 of the featured airports was 15 minutes.

A CAA spokesperson said the data will enable passengers to “make informed choices about which airports they fly from”, and that the industry “should constantly strive to improve punctuality to enhance the passenger experience”. The Week reported.

A spokeswoman for Luton said: “We regret any delay our passengers’ experience.” He further said factors such as air traffic control strikes, late arriving aircraft, bad weather and congested airspace, which are beyond the airport’s control led to the delays.

London Gatwick Airport said it is doing “everything within its power” to improve its punctuality.

A spokesperson for the Airport Operators Association (AOA) said “The UK needs to modernise its airspace. Airports are working with air traffic service providers and the Government to plan and deliver the necessary changes so everyone can continue to fly with a minimum of delays.”

10 worst Airports in terms of punctuality are:

  • Luton: 19.7 minutes
  • Gatwick: 18.9 minutes
