London City Airport Records Busiest Week after Tourists Boost Numbers

London City Airport just enjoyed its busiest week in its history. Figures published by the Airport show that the 100,000 passenger mark was surpassed for the first ever.

101,336 customers either departed from or arrived in the airport between 19 March and 25 aboard 1525 flights.

The airport, which has existed for 31 years, recorded a 2% increase beating the last record that was achieved in June 2016.

Moreover, last Thursday, the airport recorded its busiest day ever when 18,607 passengers came into the airport doors.

Strong performances from British Airways and Flybe boosted the passenger numbers by flying to popular destinations like Amsterdam, Dublin and Edinburgh.

Airport CEO, Robert Sinclair, said: “This passenger milestone comes less than a week after London City Airport was named the best airport of its size in the world in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2018.

“It is also a further reminder of just how important the airport’s £480 million transformation programme is, to meet increasing aviation demand in London, and create a world-class gateway that serves the whole of the city.”

Sinclair further said the airport is currently targeting a mix of both business and leisure travellers. Traditionally, the airport has been a base for business flights due to its closeness to Canary Wharf.

The surge in travellers using the airport has been attributed to the high number of tourists travelling to and from popular destinations.

The airport owned by Alberta Investment Management Corporation and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan is currently undergoing a £480 million revamp set to be complete in 2022.

The airport expects around 55,000 passengers to travel over the course of Easter Weekend.
