Jet2 Starts Flying From Stansted Airport

Low cost airline Jet2 has launched flights and holidays from London Stansted to Alicante and Lanzarote. The first flights took off from Stansted for Alicante on Thursday, March 30, which saw the earliest passengers to check-in   gifted with a free holiday. The Leeds-based airline has added more routes and aircraft and will fly to 27 destinations from Stansted Airport, including Ibiza, Alicante, Rhodes, Malaga, Zante, Crete and Gran Canaria.

Stansted Airport’s chief executive, Andrew Cowan said: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome the first Jet2.com passengers to London Stansted as they jet off on the airlines first ever flights from the airport on brand new aircraft."This is the start of what we believe will be a very successful partnership, providing people from across London and the east of England with a fantastic range of great value, quality holidays and a wide choice of flight-only options to many European hotspots from their local airport.”

Jet2 flights and package holidays from Jet2holidays are available at nine UK airports, having recently launched at Birmingham Airport, where it will fly to 23 destinations. Earlier in the year, Ryan air launched nine new routes from Stansted, although it has announced plans to focus growth away from the UK after Brexit.

Ryan air’s Chief Commercial Officer David O’Brien said the airline was only reacting to the uncertainty caused by Brexit in the aviation industry. Meanwhile, Ryan air has raised eyebrows on the cost of Stansted’s new arrival hall saying: “we do not agree with the excessive (£478million) cost of these plans”.

Stansted plans to construct a dedicated facility for all arriving passengers, a forecourt and improved access and service roads. The plans have so far been approved by sustainability groups such as Nature England and Stop Stansted Expansion.
