Heathrow Records Busiest Day Ever on Good Friday

More than 136,000 passengers boarded flights from Heathrow Airport on March 30, the busiest day ever since the opening of the airport.

Many passengers took advantage of the Easter holiday and half term to travel to see loved ones and for holiday trips.

According to the airport records, 6.5 million passengers used the airport in March of this year up by 5.5% in the previous year.

Some of the best performers were long-haul emerging destinations like Africa, Middle East and Latin America. There was a 12% growth in African markets, 11% rise in the Middle East and a 7.3% rise in Latin America.

The volumes of cargo transported grew by 1.5% with US and Japan recorded as the fastest growing markets.

The report comes ahead of a vote in parliament on whether Heathrow should build a third runway.

The Transport Select Committee backs the building of a third runway and has urged other MPs to come on board, once concerns over noise, regional connectivity, air quality and airport charges have been addressed.

“The booming growth in passenger numbers and cargo, particularly from emerging markets, underpins the urgency to secure Britain's economic future with a third runway at Heathrow - which has now been backed by the cross-party Transport Select Committee,” said chief executive John Holland-Kaye.

Heathrow is the second busiest airport in the world and the busiest airport in Europe with 78 million passengers using the airport in 2017. A third runway will increase the airport’s capacity to serve thousands more.
