Heathrow Airport to Sell Entire Contents of Terminal 1 in Auction

Auctioneers CA Global Partners said that “Heathrow Airport, Complete Contents of Terminal 1” would be auctioned off on 21 April 2018 at the Thistle London Heathrow Terminal 5 Hotel.

The terminal had its last flight in June of 2015 and is now not in use. At the time of its closure Heathrow Airport stated, “The Terminal closure will make way for improved service and way finding around the airport and eventually an extension of the new Terminal 2 will take its place.”

At the auction, Baggage carousels, check-in desks, security scanners, 15 escalators, 1950s artwork and more than 2,000 security cameras will be up for grabs.

Daniel Gray, from CA Global Partners, said “a sale comprising the entire contents and infrastructure of an entire major airport terminal is unprecedented.”

A series of murals by artist Stefan Knapp, commissioned for the building opening in the 1950s, are expected to attract collectors.

“As well as the stunning art by Stefan Knapp, some of the signage in Terminal One is iconic and bound to attract interest from collectors.” Gray said.

“Some of the contents have significant historic value and there may even be elements of the furnishing that would appeal to nightclubs or other entertainment venues. We anticipate a broad range of interest.”

According to the Independent, Jamie Bowden, —an aviation consultant— said he will not attend the auction. He told the Independent, “Considering the departure queues and baggage belt breakdowns I had to contend with, I think I don’t want to be reminded.”

The money collected from the auction will be used to fund Heathrow’s upgrade.
