Airports Come to a Standstill as ‘Mini Beast from the East’ Sweeps Into UK

More than 10,000 passengers were on Sunday left stranded after flight cancellations at Heathrow Airport following heavy snowfall.

The flurries and dustings of snow and ice dubbed the “Mini Beast from the East” caused around 120 flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports to be cancelled.

Forecasts showed the snow fed in from the North Sea and it had been predicted that as much as 25CM of snowfall was to be expected in some parts of UK from Saturday.

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said: “The best way to describe this is as a real return to wintry conditions.

“The last couple of days have been quite mild across parts of the UK - we got to around 16C (on Thursday) in Wales - but by Saturday all of us will be back to very cold weather.

“Bitterly cold is the best way to describe it - temperatures on the face of it probably just around freezing, but with wind it's going to feel well below freezing.”

Amber warnings had been issued for several cities in the UK including London.

British Airways had the largest number of grounded flights after the airline cancelled 64 short-haul flights and a round trip from Heathrow to New York Newark.

BA said, “We have merged a small number of flights travelling to or from Heathrow Airport.

“During cold weather conditions, aircraft have to be de-iced prior to departure to ensure that they are safe, and additional measures are taken to ensure the safety of our operation is maintained at all times.”

BA allowed passengers booked for Sunday to postpone their flights to either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at no charge.

An Air Malta flight and an EasyJet flight from Gatwick Airport were also cancelled.
