A new survey shows Heathrow airport’s expansion will lead to greater Economic gains to the whole country.

A new independent survey by QUOD, commissioned by Heathrow airport has pointed to Heathrow’s expansion as the best move to secure more jobs for the region and also to have better GDP gains. This report comes as the consultation by the airports commission comes to a close, fanning the fire on the aviation debate.

The report says that most benefits will be felt outside of London. This finding has been further supported by the public endorsement of Heathrow by 26 chambers of commerce in the UK. Employment benefits, through increased trade volumes and massive foreign direct investment injections into Heathrow airport, will see 179,800 new jobs created across UK. More Long haul connections and increased cargo flights will bring large business volumes to the UK

Economic growth through more trade is expected to rise, with towns away from the south east benefitting the most. Wales and Northern Ireland are poised to benefit most from Research and development and in matters of technology, with more jobs being experienced in these sectors.

When compared to Heathrow, expansion at Gatwick airport will account for 49,600 new jobs while expansion at Heathrow airport accounts for 179,800 new jobs in the whole of the UK by 2050.

This study adds weight to an Airports commission report that confirmed expansion at Heathrow was more beneficial. The commission estimates that an expansion at Heathrow would bring economic benefit of £211 billion across the UK.

Heathrow’s CEO, John Hollard-Kaye said, the verdict was out. Only Heathrow airport could be in a position to rebalance the economy by interconnecting all the towns in the UK and connecting them to the world. An expanded Heathrow, he said, would be the most modern, efficient and very sustainable, attracting more business opportunities and creating more jobs not only at the airport but to the whole country.
