New "green" ship to run from UK!

Brittany Ferries has announced that the new ‘green’ ferry that is being built by STX France, is set to run from the UK.  Said to be the “most environmentally-friendly ferry in UK waters”, the ferry is powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas) and releases approximately 25% less CO2 that marine fuel oil during combustion, and there’s no smoke!  In addition, according to Britany Ferries, the ship demonstrates very low emissions in nitrogen oxide and is free of sulphur.

Set to be the largest ferry in the company’s fleet of vessels, it will be ready for service in time for the summer season of 2017, handling the longer routes from the UK to Spain, carrying nearly 2,500 passengers, and will also replace the Pont-Aven as Britany Ferries’ flagship.

With a top speed of 24.5 knows, being able to carry 800 cars, and with the added benefits of an indoor pool, restaurants, 2 cinemas, 30 pet-friendly cabins and pet kennels, you can be sure that this will be a huge addition to the company’s current fleet and represent a new era in ferry travel.  Mike Bevens, Group Commercial Director at Britany Ferries, said: “This addition to our feet will incorporate all the best features of our other vessels to as to provide our customers with a truly exceptional experience.  No other ferry in the UK will come close to offering this ship’s range of facilities.”

And in yet more positive news, and a good indicator of the year ahead for many ferry companies, the port of Dover has reported their best traffic figures since 2009, with a rise of 13% in 2013!  Over 2.2 million freight vehicles passed through the port last year; and passenger numbers also saw a significant increase, by as much as 7%, and was a welcome boost to the port’s recent focus on providing choice paid dividends and superb customer service.  Tim Waggott, Chief Executive at the Port of Dover, said: “Such growth acknowledges the commitment of the Port and its major ferry customers to provide the best cross-channel product, and reflects, come rain or shine – and more recently high winds – the reliability and resilience of Dover in getting people and goods to where they need to be.”  And for all those that have travelled through Dover, he added: “My congratulations to our ferry partners and my thanks to all of our customers who entrusted us with their international travel last year.  We will work hard in order to build on that trust as we create the best port in the world.”

Strong, bold words from the man at Dover but, judging by the impressive figures they’ve reported, not misplaced!
