Good News for London Commuters As Transport for London Announces Plans to Introduce 4G Mobile Coverage on the Tube

In an attempt to catch up with major cities like Paris, Berlin and Tokyo, Transport for London (TfL) has announced that by 2019 there will be 4G mobile coverage in tube stations and tunnels.

The announcement came after a successful trial run on the Waterloo and City line. The experiment involved making a data call during a journey between Waterloo and Bank. The call stayed connected throughout the journey.

The mobile service providers who took part in the trial run include Vodaphone, O2, Three and EE. These companies assured commuters that 4G mobile coverage will be available in the tube once the service is rolled out in 2019.

Theo Blackwell, London’s Chief Digital Officer, said: “This is a brilliant initiative and part of our work to improve connectivity at home, in our high streets, public spaces and across the transport network.

“TfL's innovation shows we can make a real difference and benefit Londoners through using city-wide public assets in a smarter way, starting with the Tube.”

Currently, 97% of underground stations have access to Wi-Fi connection, however, the signal drops whenever trains travel through tunnels.

Graeme Craig, Director of Commercial Development at TfL, said: “The success of this trial shows that we are on track to unlock one of the UK’s most high profile not-spots and deliver 4G mobile coverage throughout our tunnels and Tube stations.

“This is great news for our customers and will also help us generate vital commercial income to reinvest in modernising and improving transport in London.”

The 4G coverage will allow commuters to check for live travel information on the tube, check emails and social media, and read news without interruptions.
