Want to take a city break?  You may need deep pockets!

Thinking of taking a city break?  London, Paris, New York?  Great cities; plenty to do; popular destinations… But following TripAdvisor’s latest report, you’d better make sure you have deep pockets!  The travel review site has just released their results on their ‘Top 10’ most expensive and cheapest cities and yes, you’ve guessed it, not only are these three cities in the Top 10, they are the Top 3 with London leading the way!  But it must be said, there wasn’t much between the three…

London has moved up six places on last year’s poll with a one-night stay averaging at £312; that’s more than three times the price of a city break in Hanoi, Vietnam which was the best value destination at an average price of just £92.

The cities were assessed according to an overnight stay in a 4 star hotel, the cost of a meal, cocktails and taxi journeys.  Paris came in a close second at an average for the package of £306; New York was £301; Stockholm registered a total of £287; with Zurich, Toronto, Oslo, Helsinki, Copenhagen and even Sydney making the final Top 10 at £225.

On the other side of the coin, the TripIndex Cities Top 10 also listed the best value destinations, led by Hanoi and closely followed by Jakarta in Indonesia, Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt and Bangkok in Thailand – another popular destination.

European countries fared well in terms of best value with Sofia in Bulgaria and beautiful Prague in the Czech Republic making the Top 10, whilst Jakarta being the second least expensive destination.  And if you like your cocktails, take a visit to Cancun; if you’re a foodie, choose Stockholm; and if you’re looking for cheap taxi journeys, it’s time to head for Jakarta… again!

That’s not to say there aren’t cheaper, more affordable places to stay, eat and drink, and if you take public transport, then your travel costs will be less as well.  So, if you’re planning a city break, don’t be afraid to visit these popular Top 10 destinations but do your homework!
