Not so much a single city as a vast and sprawling metropolis, held together by sparkling thread of the River Thames, London is captivating, noisy and confident world capital. All Britain’s road numbers radiate from Trafalgar Square, and that’s a good place to start.
Nelson’s Column towers above a fine array of state buildings, churches and galleries. To the south, Whitehall leads to Westminster, with its Gothic Cathedral and the distinctive frontage of the Palace, overlooking the river.
This is home of United Kingdoms Parliament and at one end Big Ben’s tower is a symbol of British democracy. Another road from Trafalgar Square leads to Buckingham Palace, London home of the Queen and another ironic symbol of the state. North of Trafalgar Square, Charing Cross road runs up to the shopping Mecca of Oxford Street, and demarcates the edge of Soho, still a Bohemian and exciting quarter. Not faraway is the West End and Piccadilly Circus, a byword for bustle and hubbub. East of Trafalgar Square, the Strand and Fleet Street lead into the original hearth of London, still known as the City. The Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral are probably the best known sights here, along with the unmistakable turrets of Tower Bridge.
