Covent Garden became the site of a fruit and vegetable market in the 19th century, but when market trades moved out in 1974 it was turned into the present Piazza, with shops, stalls, eating places and street entertainers (who have to prove their worth by audition), such as the gold-painted man (pictured right). There’s still a daily market held here (Mon-Sat 10-7, Sun 11-6), with a wonderful range of crafts, jewellery, clothing and accessories (Tue-Sun) and antiques (Mon). To the northwest of the Piazza is the magnificently refurbished Royal Opera House. On the opposite side of the Piazza you’ll find the former Flower Market, now London’s Transport Museum (Sat-Thu 10-6, Fri 11-9). With enough red buses and Tube iconography to please any enthusiast. Nearby are two of the area’s famous theatres, the elegant Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the Lyceum, on Shaftesbury Avenue.
