Journey to Canterbury

Much remains of the medieval city that grew up catering to millions of pilgrims who journeyed each year to the shrine of the English saint, Thomas Becket. The cathedral, approached via the ornate 16th-century Christ Church Gate, dates from around 1070. Its main glory is the 12th-and 13th-century stained glass featuring pilgrim scenes.

Medieval city walls enclose three sides of Canterbury and its narrow, crooked alleys lined with timbered leaning buildings. One of the original 14th-century gates, West Gate on St. Peter`s Street, still survives. The underground Roman Museum in Longmarket, houses the remains of a Roman house and re-created interiors. Outside the city are the ruins of St. Augustine`s Abbey, founded in AD597, and burial place of the missionary who brought Christianity to Britain.
