About Gatwick Airport

Gatwick’s first airfield licence was obtained on 1 August 1930. The first scheduled flight from Gatwick was to Paris on 17 May 1936 and the fare was £4.25 which included 1st Class rail travel from Victoria. Gatwick situated on the main London to Brighton railway line was the first airport to have a rail link to its capital city.

The outbreak of World War II brought a halt to development and the airport was requisitioned by the military on 6 September 1939 and returned to Civilian control in 1946.

With the expansion of civil flying it was seen that a second airport for the London area would be required and on 30 July 1952, the Cabinet Home Affairs Committee approved proposals to develop Gatwick Airport In October 1954 a second white paper was published and this followed by Gatwick Airport’s closure in 1956 to allow construction work o proceed. The new Gatwick Airport was opened by H.M. The Queen on 9 June 1958.
