Coventry Cathedral
On 14 November 1940 a bomb destroyed the medieval cathedral at Coventry. Its ruins now stand along side the new cathedral, designed by the Scottish architect Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) and consecrated in 1962. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of modern architecture, Spence’s edifice shows that contemporary style can still produce a feeling of spirituality. It has a great sense of internal space, height, peace and light, and is further distinguished by a parade of modern works of art.
Most notable are the tapestry Christ in Glory by Graham Sutherland, bronzes by John Piper. See the West Screen before you leave, which is a wall of glass engraved with saints and angels.
